eMetrics Stockholm 2008: Tough times call for tough measures!

As I downloaded the eMetrics Stockholm presentations a couple of days before leaving for Atlanta & DC, I promised myself that this time, I would blog about it: charming eMetrics Stockholm & those stairs, those stairs, the horror!

It reminded me of a Web Analytics journey: you have to hang in there to get to the top, the holy grail of the low hanging fruit before moving onto more consistent testing & optimization, once you’ve fixed the obvious stuff. This in order to drive those conversation rates up and influence your company’s online strategy by suggesting ways of decreasing costs & increasing revenue i.e. make smart use of Internet applications. And by applications, I don’t only mean public sites, Intranets & Extranets but any web based application used by any person involved with your company who needs to get something done. We’ve been having quite some fun with that lately at OX2/LBi ;-) integrating data coming from multiple sources while setting up readable dashboards for business users and adding Web Analytics data when only necessary.

My little European Web Analytics Dreamteam

I initially intended to call this blog post “You Guys Rock” but I was worried that it might be mistaken for a comment about last week’s Xchange. I’m sure a lot of smarter people will blog about what we all discussed together in San Francisco some days ago. It was fun indeed, Andy totally blew me away – was I the only one? -, and I regret not having put any Bvlgari soap in my bags…
And to be quite honest, the “you people rock” quote is actually attributable to Jim Sterne’s eMetrics summits so, I went for something else.

Online Privacy Panel – eMetrics San Francisco – Post 1

As you have read this year I attended without Aurélie eMetrics San Francisco as she had to take care of our most important project ever: Luca ;-)

This post is the first of a series that I’ll be writing in the coming weeks regarding some of the sessions and conversations that I had during the conference. Usually it’s Aurélie who writes these kind of posts, but I promissed her that I would represent her during and after the conference so here it goes.

On the day 1, we had a very interesting panel that discussed Privacy and Ethics, the panelists were: Jack Jia from Baynote (previously CTO at Interwoven), Sergio Maldonado from MV Consultoria in Spain, Bob Page from Yahoo and Seth Romanow from Microsoft. I’ve chosen this topic for my first post as there’s a lot of discussion lately here in the European Union and following some interesting conversations last year with Bob Page regarding this topic.

A new life starts, but some things don’t change

As you might have read, Aurélie and I had a great moment in our lifes this week with the birth of our son: Luca

Luca & AurélieLuca Dechamps Pols was born this Wednesday at 20h34, he weighted 3,260 kg and measured 50cm. It’s too soon to tell from whom he got his looks, but I can tell that he has his mother’s eyes (Russian influence).

I wanted to thank all emails and messages (sms, facebook, skype & twitter) that we have received. It is really a special moment and now we will start discovering how this is going to change our lifes. A friend of ours told me that without doing too complex statistics he could tell that we would spend less time facing computer screens ;-)

But not all changes and this is why Saturday I’ll be flying to San Francisco to attend eMetrics (our little tradition). This time, as you might understand, Aurélie won’t be able to attend, but I’ll do my best to represent her, specially in the Industry Insights Day. I’m also proud to attend this year eMetrics as Jim just asked me to join his Advisory Council. Thank you Godfather, I hope to match your expectations.

eMetrics, as you know is the Mecca of Web Analytics. Everybody involved in Web Analytics should at least attend once eMetrics San Francisco (and more if possible)!

Why should you come? Continue reading ‘A new life starts, but some things don’t change’

eMetrics Summit Munich 2008

eMetrics headerRené and I (“Wandering” Dave Rhee) had the pleasure of attending eMetrics Munich last week, where we were able to meet with many of the other thought leaders in the Web Analytics industry. We are delighted to sponsor such a gathering of the industry’s finest minds, and the reason we recommend to OX2’s existing analytics clients as well as our analytics prospects who are already LBi Group agency clients is because of the breadth of real case studies you can find presented.

WAA sponsor logoIn the early years of the industry, back when Jim Sterne and OX2 partner Eric T. Peterson were just getting started with the Web Analytics Association (which we are also proud to sponsor), the discussions were usually about tools, what they could measure, and what they couldn’t. Even recently, when we’d grown to understand that both logfile analysis and page tagging solutions were complementary, and not competitive with each other, we’d hear the endless debates about cookie deletion, or today’s technology-based issues such as how to tag flash or video. (Should AJAX events be considered page views? It depends on what’s important to you!)

What keeps the conference fresh and exciting, though, is that each year, in each city (Munich, San Francisco, London, Stockholm, Washington DC, or Toronto), practitioners show up to tell us what works for them — and more importantly, what interesting and unexpected ways their analytics initiative may have failed to drive their business forward, so that we can all profit from their lessons learned. Now, it’s rare in any industry to find such cooperation between practitioners, whose firms are ostensibly competitors, and we give Jim and his team all due credit for taking the time to find presenters who understand that thinking carefully about what didn’t work as expected can be just as good an investment of your time as building on your past successes. Yahoo acquires IndexTools: Congrats to both!

I was just having a German beer at eMetrics Munich when all of a sudden Eric sent me a message to my mobile: Have you seen that IndexTools has been acquired by Yahoo?

At first I was like… What are you saying? And then I realized how big this was going to be for our maturing Industry.

I will not start now debating about what are the possible implications as Eric has already published an excellent post highlighting the different options following this acquisition, but I just wanted to share with you what Oliver has just told me when we were discussing the news: ‘Web Analytics won’t be a vendors Industry anymore but a consultants one’; and this is really true if Eric prediction becomes reality (in his post he predits that before christmas IndexTools will be free).

Before I leave you to digest these news, I wanted to publicly congratulate Dennis and his team. Knowing Dennis for quite some years now, I can only say that he deserves it. Congratulations Dennis! And please don’t leave us for some margaritas in the Caribbeans ;-)

Cheers from sunny Munich,

René

In a few weeks…. eMetrics Washington!

eMetrics Washington 2007It’s becoming a little tradition to fly over to the US to attend the eMetrics Summits. In a few weeks in Washington Aurélie and I will be attending the eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit and we’re really looking forward. Aurélie will be presenting and I’ll be networking and attending the lobby bar as usual. And yes, don’t worry, I’ll bring the chocolates ;-)

I’m really looking forward catching up with all our Web Analytics friends from the other side of the Atlantic (Eric, Jim, Avinash, Bryan, Clint, Stéphane, Ian, Joseph, Judah, Dylan, Andrea, Brian, June, Braden, …) but also some European friends that will also be making the trip as Vicky, Neil and Oliver.

If you’re serious about Web Analytics, this is the conference you need to attend. If you attended our Web Analytics Day and you enjoyed it, attend eMetrics you will be bluffed.

Here’s a little video that I hope will make you think about it:

If you can’t attend eMetrics Washington, you can also attend eMetrics Stockholm that we will be also attending and were Aurélie is also speaking ;-)

I wanted also to announce that it’s our Design Department that has come up with the new eMetrics logo and the creatives used to advertise this event.

See you in Washington DC,

René
